Accounting/Finance (US) - General Accounting


The Senior Accountant serves as the key finance contact for all general ledger accounting needs to support the core SAGE publishing business. The position will assist the Senior Accounting General Manager in developing and maintaining accounting principles, practices and procedures to ensure accurate and timely monthly management account reconciliations and year-end financial statements. The position requires considerable knowledge of basic accounting principles and accounting functions in order to work independently to complete tasks. This includes but is not limited to general ledger management, specialist revenue reporting, period-end closing, posting journal entries, reconciling balance sheet accounts, variance analyses and working with colleagues in our international offices. The Senior Accountant will also be involved in special projects and various analyses as requested by management.

Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be a self-starter, excellent problem solver, flexible, resourceful, organized, process driven, and have a high degree of integrity and ethics
  • Assist the Senior General Accounting Manager in the ownership of the general ledger and the month-end close process related to corporate accounting, including preparing and reviewing journal entries and supporting work paper reconciliations for key balance sheet accounts, ensuring disposal of reconciling items on a timely basis
  • Manage the accurate monthly accounting for SAGE revenues with focus on first-time quality for proper revenue recognition, correct classification, and accuracy of adjusting and accrual entries if needed
  • Perform budget to actual variance analysis and research any discrepancies
  • Guide the staff accountant to analyze, reconcile and settle intercompany transactions monthly and to foster a close working relationship with the international finance team counterparts
  • Develop and implement new procedures and processes to enhance the workflow
  • Provide training to new and existing staff as needed
  • Align with the Financial Planning & Analysis team to support their preparation of budgets and forecasts
  • Provide expertise through in-depth knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and their application
  • Maintain key relationships with our business partners through clear communication and agile responses to queries
  • Support the year-end and interim financial audit process by providing high quality data and documentation, and effective coordination with colleagues and other dependencies
  • Provide required support to other Accounting disciplines, including Trade and Royalty payments processing, Payroll, Operations Accounting, and Credit, Claims & Collections
  • Provide ad hoc support to the Senior Accounting Manager, VP-Controller and SVP-CFO as needed

Qualifications & Education

  • In-depth knowledge of accounting and transactional processes; CPA preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 3 or more years of public accounting experience with relevant experience and knowledge of GAAP required – preferably in a company > $100million in annual revenue with product-based operations
  • Experience in supporting cross-functional stakeholders, either through routine responsibilities or project work
  • Experience with supporting multi-site, and multi-currency operations at a fast-paced company
  • Experience with enterprise accounting software packages;
  • Ability to work independently and achieve high quality output and accuracy
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-conscious environment with rapidly changing priorities
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Advanced skills in MS Excel required
  • Familiarity with BlackLine a plus
