The Senior Market Development Editor is a highly strategic role within the College Editorial Department. The Senior Market Development Editor is responsible for the editorial development of integrated print and digital content for key first editions (titles in AA-AAA markets) and “break out” revisions (i.e. 2nd editions in AA-AAA markets with potential to reach AA-AAA sales status) to help these titles exceed sales goals. The Senior Market Development Editor conducts quantitative and qualitative market research and product development activities to validate editorial strategies, uncover market needs for digital resources, analyze the competitive landscape, understand emerging market trends, define customer profiles, and inform go-to-market strategies for assigned titles. The Senior Market Development Editor partners with Sales and Marketing to identify and engage priority target customers through editorial development activities and refine the target list of priority target customers throughout the development process. The Senior Market Development Editor builds strong working relationships with other key departments, and communicates market development strategies and plans to other departments and divisions within the company. The Senior Market Development Editor provides formal training and informal mentoring to the Content Development Editorial team to establish market development strategies as part of a standardized editorial development program for print and digital products across the College Editorial team.


The position requires 7+ years proven experience in higher education academic publishing, including some combination of experience in editorial, sales, and marketing. Success is measured as follows: development and implementation of strategic editorial and market development plans for key titles, exceeding sales targets for these titles, and the effective training and mentorship of Content Development Editors.

Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities


Creation and Execution of Editorial Development Program

  • Manage print and digital content development for key first edition and “breakout” revision titles in accordance with our publishing priorities, including development plans, author support, competitive benchmarking and analysis, reviewing and market feedback, feature and pedagogy development, and art programs. Digital resources include interactive ebooks, assessment (e.g., test banks, quizzes, remediation), PowerPoints, various types of video, interactive and social media, online activities and simulations, web resources, journal articles, and study tools.


  • Plan and manage video programs in accordance with our publishing priorities, to accompany books, courses, and for other educational purposes, including original and third-party video.


  • Develop and manage plans, schedules, and budgets that correspond with editorial, marketing, sales, and production schedules, and the needs of our markets.


  • Find, commission, and manage freelance DEs, SMEs, and other specialists to assist in content and product development.


  • Manage transmittals, manuscript/content review, permissions, and design memos. During production, ensure efficient workflow and quality control by attention to page proofs, art/design, user testing, and functionality.


  • Manage preparation and transfer of digital files and resources for disposition and posting. Ensuring efficient workflow and quality outcomes in IEBs, instructor and student companion sites, coursepacks, and in other platforms.
  • Solicit market feedback and conduct market development activities with faculty and students through focus groups, interviews, peer reviewing, surveys, webinars, product demonstrations, and lead generation. Develop materials and tools in support of products.


  • Prepare and assist with product and competitor information in support of Marketing, Market Development, and Sales, including market research, lead generation, creative brief work, product information, transition guides, and sales tools.


  • In conjunction with the content development management team, plan and execute broad-scale goals and strategies to meet needs in content development.
  • Travel to campuses a minimum of 20 days each year meeting with faculty, scouting for authors, reviewers, preparers, promoting SAGE titles, and conducting market research. Represent SAGE at regional and national academic conferences.


  • Provide training, mentorship, and general support within the organization.


  • Develop and maintain project logs, reports, guidelines, standards, and training materials.

Market Development Direction and Support



  • Directly engage with potential customers via regular contact to develop and drive messaging and sales strategies.


  • In collaboration with Market Development Manager, take a lead role in devising strategies for effective editorial development, sales direction, and support of these key titles.


  • In collaboration with Market Development Manager, develop programmatic approach to SAGE Market Development


Leadership and Training 

  • Provide formal training and informal mentoring to the Content Development Editorial team to establish market development strategies as part of a standardized editorial development program for print and digital products across the College Editorial team.


 Product and Market Knowledge


  • Continually develop product, market, and competitor knowledge for assigned titles through campus visits, conventions, editorial, author, and customer communication.



  • Utilize this knowledge of our products, their markets, and our competitors, to strategically develop our titles and focus marketing and sales efforts to maximum effect.



Editorial and Production Input and Support

 ·         Work closely with Editorial and Production staff to relay market needs and feedback, suggested product improvements, and timing requirements for forthcoming titles.

·         Work with Art department to provide design input and promotional copy for books in a timely fashion.


Conference Attendance

·         Conduct effective development focus groups and editorial conversations in support of key textbooks and technology.

·         Drive sales conversations on key textbooks and ensure accuracy, completeness, and timely delivery (to Customer Care) of adoption/exam copy orders.

·         Travel to conventions annually in support of planned market development activities.

·         In collaboration with Marketing, arrange and host special events for key titles, as needed.

·         Interact professionally with authors and customers.


Customer/Author Relations

·         Build strong, positive relationships with key potential adopters and top targets for titles being developed

·         Act as representative of the company when dealing with potential or existing customers and authors.

·         When communicating with customers and authors, take appropriate actions to ensure they have a positive experience with, and image of, the company.

Qualifications & Education

Qualifications and Education:

Any combination equivalent to, but not limited to, the following:




  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree
  • 7 years proven experience in college publishing, including sales, marketing and editorial development experience
  • 3 years in editorial development or acquisitions editorial experience
  • 1 year experience developing content with digital products
  • Experience successfully launching first edition products




  • Proven project/product management experience
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including experience delivering sales presentations.
  • Superior planning and organizational skills
  • Personnel management aptitude, skills, and experience preferred
  • Experience in meeting management
