Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities:

The job functions include, but are not limited to, the following:


Supervise Editors


  • Mentor and train staff members. Assign and monitor annual goals; write and deliver all annual reviews (with input and discussion from the Publisher, and/or Editorial Director).
  • Ensure that each direct report is properly engaged and challenged, and that their work is completed correctly and on time. Utilize performance improvement techniques as needed.
  • Monitor workloads of staff; ensure contracts are signed and renewed, monitor T&E expenses and other controllable operational costs, and preparation of internal and external reports as required. These reports primarily include publisher reports to societies and editors, varying in frequency from monthly to annual.


Journal Acquisitions


  • Acquire society owned journals according to annual revenue and profit targets.
  • Identify and speak with leading academics and society professionals in order to understand their publishing needs. Aid current journals staff in relationship management with current business.
  • Represent SAGE at Industry events, society, editor and publishing events within DC area. Aid in any acquisition bid presentation in DC area as needed.
  • Ability to create and maintain an annual list of targets in which to solicit RFPs as needed. Ensures SAGE has the opportunity to bid on all RFPs in designated subject areas of responsibility.
  • Prepare and submit proposals, P&Ls and contracts for approval. Deliver presentations to society leadership and negotiate contracts to completion in order to meet annual signing goals.

Journal Management

  • Monitor the performance of journals in the assigned portfolio, by reviewing subscription and profit-and-loss statements. Report on the status of this activity in monthly reports to manager.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of each journal in a portfolio, which includes understanding the business model, finances, audience, etc. This may include review of the manuscript submission process, peer review, revision and resubmission policies, and optimal editorial board function.
  • Work closely with both SAGE Marketing and the journal editor to increase article usage and citations. This will include frequent communication with the editor, as well as acting as the liaison between marketing and the editor.
  • Renew all society contracts SAGE wishes to renew for assigned journals early or before expiration of contract. Work with SAGE’s contracts department to ensure that all editor and society contracts are current. Issue contract amendments as required. Ensure that all contracts are signed and returned in a timely fashion to society or editor.
  • Manage external relationships proactively with journal editors, society contacts, and others as appropriate. Liaise with internal departments to share information in order to influence journal performance.  Departments include marketing, sales, production, circulation, art, commercial sales, customer service, IT and finance.

Qualifications & Education

Any combination equivalent to, but not limited to, the following:




  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university
  • 5 years experience working for an academic publisher
  • Experience acquiring journals or managing a portfolio of journals
  • Experience leading or managing a team
  • Excellent English verbal and written business communication skills
  • Computer skills, including working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point; familiarity with contact management software desirable
