Editorial (US) - CQ Researcher


CQ Researcher, an award-winning Washington, D.C.-based current-events and policy publication serving the academic library market, seeks a managing editor with exceptional editing and leadership skills to help chart the future of the Researcher franchise and advance an ambitious editorial mission. CQ Researcher reaches millions of college students each month, helping to guide their understanding of current issues and enhancing their critical-thinking skills. Applicants should have at least 10 years of long-form editing experience for a quality news-oriented publication, familiarity with multimedia journalism, a keen interest in policy and business trends, and the demonstrated ability to work efficiently and accurately in a deadline- and team-oriented environment. The position reports to the executive editor of CQ Researcher and SAGE Business Researcher, imprints of SAGE Publishing, the world’s largest independent academic publisher. Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities

  • Perform high-level substantive and line editing and help oversee the work of other team members to ensure that reports are well-edited, accurate, balanced and suited to CQR's core market
  • Demonstrate high-level skills as a product champion, team leader and effective collaborator within SAGE
  • Contribute to the vision and planning for CQ Researcher and the Researcher franchise
  • Help select CQR topics of interest to student researchers, librarians and other readers 
  • Commission high-caliber freelance authors  and manage them professionally
  • Manage assignment and production schedules and ensure that all editorial, workflow and production deadlines are met
  • Keep editorial costs within budget
  • Keep abreast of domestic and international news and issues to inform report assignments and timeliness of the publication
  • Help ensure that website design, content and updating meet high standards of quality, accuracy, usability
  • Collaborate with Sage sales, marketing and circulation teams to help increase revenue, circulation and renewals and raise the visibility of CQR
  • Collaborate with other team members on administrative, strategic-planning, business-related issues as needed
  • Communicate professionally, and regularly, with staff and freelance authors and in-house colleagues
  • Handle CQR administrative duties promptly

Qualifications & Education

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree, preferably in journalism
  • Minimum 10 years of long-form editing experience
  • Digital journalism and social media experience
  • Editorial-management experience
  • Solid editorial, business judgment
  • Excellent skills in grammar, punctuation and AP style
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills and professional temperament and demeanor
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks simultaneously
