As Senior Product Manager for a suite of products in the academic library market, you will be responsible for all products in the suite at varying stages of development. You will work with partners in Editorial to evolve new product ideas into practical commercial propositions.  You will lead the execution of product development, delivering high quality business plans, launching first-rate products, and pursuing necessary product improvements with a focus on commercial success, in response to market needs and in collaboration with your product team.  You will think big about the opportunities for your products, while focusing on practical, achievable deliverables to improve and grow SAGE’s online offering. You and your team will drive product improvements, redesigns, and new product launches through the appropriate processes and will be accountable for successful decision making.  You will demonstrate a deep curiosity in all aspects of your product, working diligently to build a strong knowledge of the target users and buyers.


This position is part of the global Product Management Department at SAGE, working in a dynamic part of the business focused on significantly increasing SAGE’s online product portfolio for our library customers. Products for the library market at SAGE are developed with external technology partners.

Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities

In this post, you will:


  • Interact regularly with customers and the wider market and drive similar interaction with your direct report(s), to ensure product strategy and new product ideas are based in a deep knowledge of the library market and faculty needs. This includes defining market research priorities for you and your team, gathering and testing new product and enhancement ideas, joining sales calls, defining usability testing questions, and overseeing competitive research.
  • Build and maintain a deep understanding of who is using your suite of products and for what, by analyzing usage data and conducting market research, working closely with the Discovery & Engagement group. Develop and maintain use cases and clearly communicate user stories and market findings throughout SAGE and use them to drive ongoing development to meet market needs.
  • Oversee one or more direct reports, supporting them to successfully deliver products and product enhancements within SAGE’s Product Management framework and supporting their professional development
  • Support close teamwork between your team with marketing and editorial to effectively position your products in the marketplace. Competitive research, testing of marketing messages with librarians, and internal strategic conversations should drive this work.
  • Lead Front Office meetings, clarifying product priorities, creating actions plans with partners in marketing and editorial; drive forward research, facilitate product discussions and support efficient decision making.
  • Work with your team to constantly generate and gather ideas for improving the product offerings, and then priotize ruthlessly feature development and product changes in line with the core product vision and expected commercial impact .
  • Oversee roadmaps for each set of products, prioritizing platform improvements based on business needs and communicating rationale clear across SAGE. Get buy-in from stakeholders for priorities and level of platform investment.
  • Ensure regular meaningful product updates, presentations and reports to relevant project teams and stakeholders, including product reports, roadmap updates, product P & Ls, and competitive information.
  • Working closely with key stakeholders, ensure oversight of product budgets and profitability. Contribute to strategic conversations about product challenges and risks, outlining concern areas, providing analysis, defining action plans and ensuring action.
  • Contribute to ongoing development of processes and systems to improve efficiencies and effectiveness of product development at SAGE

Qualifications & Education

Include, but are not limited to:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; UK - 2:1 or higher
  • Minimum 3 years product management experience
  • Experience working in academic publishing preferred
  • Managerial experience strongly preferred
