  • Overview


    The Editor II position is responsible for cultivating and managing a list of journals in an assigned discipline(s), as well as serve as our lead on department projects. This list may include proprietary and/or contract/leased journals. The Editor is expected to serve as SAGE’s primary liaison with journal editors and society partners. The editor will use this knowledge to help SAGE develop policies, practices, strategies and/or work products that serve their list’s needs. Project work will be assigned in conjunction with the HSS Publisher. A successful editor will help grow SAGE’s presence in their assigned discipline, and make valuable contributions to other departmental initiatives, like open access publishing, social media, or mentoring junior colleagues. This position will work directly in collaboration with the Publisher of HSS Journals to manage external relationships with key societies, as well as managing a list of titles within the US HSS Journals Editorial Department. This position is expected to provide guidance and support to key business partners, and to work with Publisher to build an Editorial presence in the DC Office.

    The job functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

    Journal Management for Journals Managed Directly

    Financial Management:

    • Monitor the performance of journals in the assigned portfolio, review subscription commercial sales, and profit-and-loss statements regularly to ensure that revenues are maximized and controllable costs are at acceptable levels. Report on the status of this activity as necessary to manager.
    • Develop an annual strategic plan for each journal in the portfolio that outlines specific actions designed to increase goals of publication or, in cases where journal OP is unacceptable, involves an improvement plan.

    Editorial Management:

    • Understand and work to include each journal in ESCI and ISI based on each journal's potential via frequent communication with the journal editor and/or society publications manager regarding editorial practices such as manuscript submission, peer review process, revision and resubmission policies, and optimal editorial board function.
    • Work with SAGE Marketing and the journal editor to increase article usage and citations. This will include acting as the liaison between marketing and the editor, when necessary, helping to explain how our campaigns may help drive usage and citations.
    • Prepare internal and external reports as required.
    • Host annual editorial board meetings for each journal where applicable. Where appropriate, facilitate editorial board meetings via teleconference.
    • Rotate journal editors as needed and oversee contract renewals. This means not automatically renewing editors but instead reviewing specific journal metrics to gauge how well an editor is doing and then make a decision regarding whether we renew the editor. Prepare contingency plans for replacing editors on each journal.
    • Work closely with the Open Access team to maximize cascades and referrals from proprietary journals to SAGE Open Access journals or traditional journals

    Relationship Management:

    • Aid HSS Editorial team in developing relationships with editorial and society contacts, both with current business and potential targets. Identify and build on relationships with leading academics and society professionals to gain an understanding of their publishing needs.
    • Manage and solidify external relationships with journal editors, society contacts, and others as appropriate.
    • Help grow Journals Editorial presence in the DC Metro Area with key society and partners
    • Work with SAGE editorial staff to anticipate needs and challenges of our society partners, and take action to ensure our success; help editors to implement changes and strategy with partners.
    • Work with Society partners to developed and grow journals in terms of impact and quality.
    • Manage strong internal relationships with colleagues that influence journal performance. This includes marketing, sales, production, circulation, art, commercial sales, customer service, IT, and finance.
    • Represent SAGE at board meetings and conferences. Stay up to date on relevant literature or news affecting journals publishing and assigned disciplines, including open access publishing and trends in the larger higher education market



    Departmental or organizational initiatives and Project Work

    • Taking on departmental or organizational wide projects as assigned; prepare working paper for discussion with Publisher and Editorial Director; upon completion, present and implement departmental projects
    • Regularly completing weekly/monthly status reports, updating management more frequently if requested
    • Representing the department on assigned internal committees, reporting back as necessary
    • Monitoring T&E expenses and other controllable costs to minimize expenditures

    Qualifications & Education



    Include, but not limited to, the following:


    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
    • 3+ years of related experience in academic publishing, preferably in journals editorial.
    • Ability to plan, organize, analyze and establish priorities to achieve results.
    • Must work well under pressure: highly motivated and energetic multi-tasker.
    • Ability to work independently within a team-oriented environment.
    • Ability to build and maintain successful business relationships.
    • Detail and results oriented.
    • Must be proficient with software, including: Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
    • Good organization, research and troubleshooting skills.
    • Must be willing to travel up to 25% of work time.
    • Ability to prioritize tasks by relative importance.
    • Ability to learn new skills quickly and effectively.
    • Demonstrated ability to creatively solve problems.
    • Excellent professional written and oral communication skills.

    • Ability to negotiate contracts to satisfactory conclusion for SAGE.
