  • Overview

    The role of the Marketing Manager is to plan and implement effective marketing strategies for journals and journal-related products and offerings that build the journal and society brand, drives sales, online usage, circulation growth and retention. This position will represent traditional subscription journals as well as open access journal management when required. Emphasis is on developing strategic and innovative marketing plans that integrate multi-channel campaigns across print and digital channels. The Marketing Manager will develop expertise in the discipline(s) he/she works in and will collaborate cross-functionally with other business pillars to effectively market and represent their journal titles in line with related business products.

    Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities

    The job functions include, but are not limited to, the following:


    Marketing Oversight of Key Journal Titles

    • Build and maintain strong business relationships with society partners and external editors to support client satisfaction and retention, while effectively managing expectations in line with business goals
    • Develop clear, results-driven marketing plans with goals that contribute to the business strategy of the publishing team for journal titles
    • Contribute to proposals and presentations for new society journal partnerships
    • Apprise Editorial partners on general and discipline specific market trends


    Creation and Implementation of Marketing Plans

    • Set, review and revise marketing plan and budget for your journals, including budget tracking, forecasting and reporting
    • Monitor ROI including sales, usage, and paper submissions of assigned products and adjust marketing efforts and budget spend accordingly to ensure maximum sales and profitability
    • Plan and execute marketing campaigns, within budget, in conjunction with marketing support staff
    • Ensure quality writing, editing, and proofing of all promotional copy
    • Select appropriate formats/marketing channels and approve all copy and target audiences for email, direct mail, non direct mail, online advertising, and social media campaigns
    • Work closely with other publishing divisions to successfully integrate marketing activities, and maximize sales, as appropriate
    • Collaborate with international marketing colleagues, primarily in the UK, to develop and implement global marketing strategies through journal cross-promotion, discipline marketing, as well as cross-pillar product promotion
    • Contribute to assigned journals marketing program, delivering demonstrating Marketing’s expertise and contributions to the business
    • Incorporate social media and digital marketing strategies into all marketing plans
    • Manage social media content planning and implementation for assigned discipline channels, including researching and selecting content, and support other channels in disciplines in which you manage journals


    Editorial and Production Input Support

    • Provide input and constructive suggestions and ideas to editorial staff on sales and circulations projections, product content and quality, market placement, and product classification of proposed and established titles
    • Support acquisitions efforts of Editorial staff as needed
    • Work closely with Editorial and Production staff to relay market needs and feedback, suggested product improvements, and timing requirements for forthcoming titles


    Conference Attendance

    • Travel to and represent company at up to 3+ conventions each year
    • Set up and break down booth as scheduled
    • Attend editorial board meetings to present updates and answer marketing questions
    • Arrange and host special events, as needed
    • Interact professionally with authors, editors, customers (society partners), and vendors

    Qualifications & Education

    Include, but not limited to, the following:

    • Bachelor’s degree required
    • 3-5+ years proven experience in publishing or marketing
    • Working knowledge of email, print, social media, and online marketing concepts
    • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs
    • Working knowledge of Adobe Acrobat preferred
    • Working knowledge of mainstream social media platforms
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills
    • Superior planning and organizational skills
    • Proven project/product management experience preferred

    Budgeting and forecasting experience helpful
