    What we are looking for in a candidate?

    A candidate that is eager to learn about open access publishing, has an interest in science, is able to quickly pick up new information and identify trending/hot topics, as well as prioritize and multi-task effectively. Further, we are looking for an energetic and creative person to help develop, grow and ensure the success of an exciting list of scientific and/or medical OA journals.

    Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities


    1. Develop and grow a list of life science and/or medical open access journals by assisting the Editor with the day-to-day management of the journal and creating annual strategic plans for each journal in the portfolio that outlines specific actions designed to increase goals of publication, or in cases where profitability is unacceptable, develop an improvement plan. Maintain accurate files and logs for each journal.
    2. This position will be responsible for managing most of the society OA titles managed by the OA team as well as several proprietary OA titles.
    3. Liaise with internal and external stakeholders (e.g., Society management where applicable, Editors, Authors, and SAGE staff) in a timely, articulate, and organized manner. Work closely with all stakeholders to ensure the regular and timely submission, peer review, and publication of articles, as well as to ensure journals adhere to their aims and scope.
    4. Oversee the transition into SAGE, and subsequent management, of newly acquired society-owned OA titles. Work closely with acquisition editors to develop a sustainable model for society titles.
    5. Liaise regularly with the Society OA team to share best practices, industry updates, and to be the main point of contact for departmental and time-sensitive projects. Ensure that internal resources  have up-to-date information for all society-owned OA titles.
    6. Attendance at conferences or meetings as necessary throughout North America.
    7. Liaise with Managing Editors, Publishing Editors and Editorial Assistants in growing the social media presence of select titles.
    8. Work effectively with Marketing, Production, Commercial Sales and the wider STM and OA team members and others throughout the organization.
    9. Provide external stakeholders, including Society management, Editors and Editorial Board members with updates and ensure that they remain active with regard to their duties; replace/maintain editors, as required.
    10. Uphold ethical standards following relevant COPE guidelines legal resources, Editors, and the SAGE legal department on specific manuscripts.
    11. Prepare status reports and work on ad-hoc projects as necessary.
    12. Attend or host meetings (incl. Editorial Board meetings) to ensure the journal’s growth and active involvement of stakeholders.
    13. Understand and work to include each journal in relevant databases such as PubMed Central, Medline and Web of Science, and ensure journal content is accurately represented at PubMed Central, Medline and Clarivate.
    14. Monitor financial statements, analyze costs and perform financial reporting.
    15. Work with the SAGE legal team to prepare/amend contracts, or ensure editor contracts are current.

    Qualifications & Education


    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
    • A minimum of one year of general office or research/laboratory experience.
    • Demonstrated excellent English verbal and written business communication skills.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point.
    • Organizational, prioritization, problem-solving, analytical, and strong attention-to-detail skills.
    • Ability to follow directions, learn, and understand departmental procedures, software, and processes.
    • Ability to manage time to meet deadlines and work professionally under pressure.
    • Ability to work effectively in a team or independently, with minimal supervision.
    • Ability to plan and manage multiple projects and effectively multi-task.
    • Ability to effectively monitor financial statements, analyze costs and perform financial reporting.
    • Ability to negotiate effectively and work with SAGE Legal to prepare or amend contracts.
    • Ability to effectively make presentations to internal/external groups.



    • 4+ years experience in medical publishing, medical communications, the pharmaceutical industry or in biomedical research position.
    • Familiarity with ScholarOne Manuscripts and HTML.
    • Previous experience as publishing editor or acquisitions editor preferred.
