  • Overview

    This internship will learn about publishing in general and also gain hands on experience in the books production department. The Books Production Intern will have an opportunity to:

    • Learn the steps to take a raw manuscript to a polished printed book
    • Assist with digital projects and tasks related to interactive eBooks, digital courseware, and companion websites for books.
    • Gain experience working in an office environment and assist with various editorial and administrative tasks.

     

    This internship is paid, part time (20-25 hours per week during normal office hours). This position for the fall semester with the potential to expand into the spring semester. Candidates MUST be current students able to work out of our office in Thousand Oaks, California (remote work is not permitted)

    Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities

    Assist production editors with the following tasks:

    • Digital project tasks for companion websites, interactive eBooks, and coursepacks.
    • Prepare the copyedited manuscript for typesetting, following Book Production's guidelines. 
    • Compare typeset proofs in Adobe Acrobat to original documents supplied by the author to check for accuracy. 
    • Check credit lines and photo credits against permissions log.
    • Review redrawn art (comparing to original art files for accuracy).
    • Process invoices for freelancers and typesetters. 
    • Update production schedules in our database. 
    • Perform prepress checks, including checking table of contents, key term page numbers, end-of-chapter terms, notes, running heads, and glossary terms.
    • Archive files.

    Qualifications & Education

    • Must be a current student pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree at an accredited college or univeristy.
    • Excellent skills in grammar, punctuation, and style.
    • Computer skills, with a proficiency in Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat.
    • Interest in Book and Digital publishing.
    • Familiarity with APA and Chicago editorial styles.
