  • Overview

    We are looking for a candidate who is eager to learn about and grow within the academic publishing industry, and is able to quickly pick up new information and engage meaningfully with the daily work. This position provides administrative and analytical support to editorial staff in the Humanities & Social Science (HSS) journals team. This position supports the business and administrative aspects of journals publishing and does not focus on writing or editing of our content. 


    This position is based in our Thousand Oaks, California office (remote work not permitted for this role).  


    Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities

    This includes, but is not limited to, the following:

    • Provide support in managing the quotidian operations of select social science journals, including administrative and clerical tasks.
    • Help service editorial development and performance goals on an individual journal basis.
    • Provide social media, podcasts, and other marketing support.
    • Conduct research, reporting, tracking, and analysis of various journal performance bibliometrics, disciplines, and industry within scholarly communications writ large.
    • As directed, set up and prepare for external journal editor visits and editorial board meetings (travel arrangements, bio creation, agenda, reimbursement and expenses).
    • Respond to miscellaneous inquires related to journals on editor’s list, as directed by editor or management.
    • Update internal and external databases, websites, and resources as required.
    • Communicate with internal and external stakeholders, including authors, editors, and societies.
    • Liaise with colleagues in other SAGE departments as needed.
    • Perform ancillary work on department-wide projects and journal acquisitions.
    • Complete ad hoc special projects as needed and assist other SAGE staff who work on the journals.
    • Keep up to date and engaged with scholarly communication industry developments.

    Qualifications & Education


    • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
    • Demonstrated excellent English verbal and written communication skills.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, OneNote, Teams, and Power Point.
    • Organizational skills, problem-solving, critical thinking, and analytical skills.
    • Strong attention to detail.
    • Demonstrated ability to follow directions, learn, and understand departmental procedures required.
    • Ability to effectively manage time to meet deadlines and work professionally under pressure.
    • Ability to learn new software.
    • Ability to work effectively in a team or independently, with minimal supervision.
    • Ability to complete and follow through on priorities.
    • Ability to plan and manage multiple projects and effectively multi-task.
    • Interest in career publishing and scholarly communications and willingness to learn. 



    • A minimum of one year of publishing or general office experience.
    • Intermediate-to-advanced Excel skills, including VBA and Macros.
    • Familiarity with HTML.
