  • Overview

    Specific to this role is the management of a specialized team focused on end-to-end sourcing operations for editorial services, typesetting, video, and animation for all print and digital SAGE and Corwin products. In addition to team management, objective setting, and performance management, the Supplier and Freelance Manager is responsible for ensuring we have an effective resourcing program that meets Production’s cost, quality, and schedule requirements.

    Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities

    The job functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

    Provide team leadership and coaching

    • Create an environment oriented to trust, open communication, creative thinking, and cohesive team effort
    • Provide the team with a vision of the project objectives
    • Motivate and inspire team members
    • Lead by setting a good example (role model) – behavior consistent with words
    • Coach and help develop team members; help resolve dysfunctional behavior
    • Facilitate problem solving and collaboration
    • Ensure discussions and decisions lead toward closure
    • Maintain healthy group dynamics
    • Intervene when necessary to aid the group in resolving issues
    • Ensure that the team members have the necessary education and training to effectively participate on the team
    • Encourage creativity, risk-taking, and constant improvement
    • Recognize and celebrate team and team member accomplishments and exceptional performance
    • Drive efficiencies, process improvement, and change management
    • Develop and drive the team to be nimble and accept change to best meet the needs of Production

    Internal and external partner requirements

    • Coordinate with typesetting vendors, copyediting vendors, animation vendors, and freelancers as necessary
    • Collaborate with Production teams to define and maintain clear specifications and service level agreements (SLAs) to support task performance
    • Ensure that the team addresses all relevant issues within the specifications and various standards
    • Work with Production teams as appropriate to resolve issues and improve performance
    • Ensure deliverables are prepared according to project requirements, cost, and schedule
    • Help keep the team focused and on track
    • Work with functional managers and the team sponsor to obtain necessary resources to support project requirements
    • Coordinate the review, presentation, and release of stats and analytics
    • Coordinate meetings when appropriate

    Communicate team status, task accomplishment, and direction

    • Provide status reporting of team activities against objectives
    • Keep the project managers informed of task accomplishment, issues, and status
    • Serve as a focal point to communicate and resolve interface and integration issues with other teams
    • Escalate issues which cannot be resolved by the team
    • Provide guidance to the team based on management direction


    Additional tasks as required


    • Set standards of professionalism and leadership in interactions with all internal staff
    • High level of effective communication internally and externally
    • Being a strong business partner, internally and externally
    • Build effective and professional relationships with internal and external customers
    • Contribute to the management of the Production Department
    • Represent and act as Ambassador for SAGE externally
    • Perform daily work with minimal supervision from direct manager

    Qualifications & Education

    Include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Bachelor’s degree
    • A minimum of five years’ experience in staff management in a publishing environment
    • Experience managing external vendors and/or supply chain
    • Experience negotiating financial agreements with vendors
    • Extensive computer skills
    • Exceptional strategic management skills
